Just Outside MCA, The Matrix, Shortly After Zinyak's Broadcast, Thursday

Several hours of searching his apartment - when he and Cara had gotten back, and again this morning - and then the greater premises of the MCA building, such as the lobby - and Atton had finally found a weapon.

Which was to say he had a broom.

He put his foot down on the head as he stepped outside and violently yanked the stick part out of it. "So what I'm gathering from this," he said, looking up at... wherever that voice had come from, just to make sure he was listening, "is that there's finally someone we can beat the poodoo out of."

They had taken all of his weapons, they had taken the Force out of his head, and they had taken the Ebon Hawk. Atton might not have been Sith anymore, but damn if he wasn't strongly inclined to make sure someone was going to die. Screaming. For this. "And then to finish up, I think I'm going to kick this Zinyak guy in the nuts."

"No, see, aiming to get you to shut up completely would go more like 'Shut up, Sparkle'," Atton said sagely.

He kicked open the cabinet with the trash can.

There was a toilet roll behind said can. Because of course there was.

Sparkle glanced down at the toilet roll, and then shrugged and made grabby motions with his one good hand.

"Okay, so what are you going for, then?"

"'Dear Sparkle, what the hell crawled up your ion engines?'"

At least Atton was considerate enough to pass him the toilet roll while he said it?

Sparkle wrinkled his nose as he took that toilet roll, and then shrugged and sighed.

"I bet asking that would work better than the silent treatment anyway," he decided, unrolling a wad of of it and going to pour some of the disinfectant into it.

"It's higher effort, though," Atton said.

He opened up a cabinet. Plates. Plates. He... probably couldn't get away with an old pizza box as a plate with Sparks around, right? Right.

Probably not. Like, if it was the box the pizza came in, maybe. But Sparkle had, like, standards these days.

Or something.

"I'll take a bowl," he decided, leaning up to try to peer over Atton's shoulder. "If you don't have any plates, man."

See? He was easy to please, and that was a statement that let him totally ignore the whole 'what crawled up your' thing!

Let's see how long he could get away with that.

Atton rolled his eyes. Hey, look-- under that box, there was a plate. Two plates! A whole cornucopia of plates!

... Yeah, two. He must have gotten them in a nostalgic fit. He shoved them both at Sparkle and raised both of his eyebrows.

"Hey, look who's all fancy," Sparkle mused, grinning a little in spite of... everything... and then holding up his bloody toilet paper. He wasn't going to grab those plates just yet, sorry. "So, did you decide to be fancy one day, or are those a glitch in the simulation?"

Sparkle really needed to stop abusing Atton's predisposition towards banter.

"Took a left turn, wound up at the Isle of IKEA," he said. "That's also where I got the coffee table."

Furniture! It was a whole new world!

Nope. So long as the predisposition towards banter was there, Sparkle was going to abuse it.

And when that failed, 'making up stupid stories' was always a nice back-up plan. Sparkle was awesome at that one, too.

"Shit, there's a coffee table? Do you ever use it for anything besides hiding weapons under?"

"Hey, I put my feet on it," Atton protested.

You know what, he'd let this go on until the microwave pinged. The pizza of truth would put a stop to this.

And this was why Sparkle didn't approve of the meat lovers. That garbage was Atton's secret weapon.

"... Remind me to not eat off the coffee table."

Atton shrugged. "That's why I have the plates," he pointed out. See? Sensible.

And then the microwave pinged.

The microwave was also a traitor and could join the meat lovers in the corner of things Sparkle didn't approve of, dammit.

"... Fair enough."

How could he argue with that logic, when he was still busy being impressed that Atton had plates in the first place?

The genuinely impressive thing was that Atton could have such a shabby apartment and yet keep the Hawk in an enduring state of immaculate perfection, honestly. Or maybe that was just a prioritization thing.

He snagged the pizza and dumped it on the top plate. "Anyway, cycling back to 'what the hell crawled up your ion engine'..."

"Dammit." See, Sparkle should have known that he couldn't get out of that chat so easily. "It's... like I said, okay? Shit's getting stupid back in Toronto, and I needed a break from there, and then I end up here and stuck in the middle of this garbage instead."

Yeah, sure, there was totally the whole story, why not.

"Well, usually when you guys get angry letters, you just break into somebody's house and take something useless," Atton said, wandering towards the living room. "At least, that's what I thought."

"Yeah, and usually it doesn't matter. But Lewis is scared this time." Sparkle frowned, and followed along behind. "Says they have bigger guns. And, like, he's fended off assholes trying to evict us before, but this is different."

Atton set the top plate down on... the coffee table, yes.

"You did move into a really fancy neighborhood," he said.

[myownface]

"Where people have money," Sparkle agreed. "And it's more obvious that we're not, you know... well-to-do or whatever. There's that disparity there."

And, you know, there were things like break-ins and stuff that hadn't been happening before. That too.

And that is why you had to be subtle, Sparks.

Atton put the other plate down next to the first. "So, what, they can throw you guys out?"

And what the hell did that have to do with that whole production of Useless: the Stage Play that went on out there?

"Lewis seems to think so," Sparkle muttered. "He's pretty much already given up. He's just not saying it in as many words. And Raine's got it through her head that Lewis has, like, crazy amounts of money he gets for taking care of us, thanks to that old bitch she's been hanging around with, so while Lewis is dealing with keeping the house, Raine is losing her shit trying to get me to go poking through his filing cabinets with her or something, and I don't have time for this shit."

Maybe he'd get to explaining the freakout, too. You know. At a time.

"Can't she go poking through the filing cabinets herself?" Atton wondered. "I mean, you don't exactly have secret service-level access to this stuff anyway."

[myownface]

"I can pick the office lock," Sparkle explained, shrugging his shoulders. "But I'm not going to go digging. Like, Lewis doesn't need to prove himself to me. If he was making that much money per kid, he wouldn't have needed to run like several businesses on the side just to move us into that house. And it would've happened way sooner. Just, like... I don't know. I guess Raine trusts me or something. It isn't like she gets along with anyone else at the home."

"Hey, maybe she can move in with the elderly lady and solve both your problems, then," Atton said.

His sense of social responsibility and how that worked for other people was a little wonky, maybe. Still. "Can they actually boot you out of that house anyway? Legally speaking?"
